The Chacaltaya glacier is a small glacier above La Paz, Bolivia at an elevation of 17,388 ft. which is much studied as it is accessible by road and has a lodge. It is rapidly receding and expected to melt completely in the first decades of the 21st century. Accelerated melting is attributed to El Niño events, which result in reduced precipitation, and to global warming. The melting of this glacier is part of a worldwide pattern of the retreat of glaciers since 1850 which has accelerated due to global warming.
