Hydraulic connection is the usual inter-dependent relationship of groundwater to surface water. If the surface of groundwater is deep enough or shielded by impermeable material there is no hydraulic connection as pumping groundwater will not affect the flow of surface water. Material such as clay which greatly retards water flow does not break hydraulic connection; it only retards its effects.
