Hyraulic lift, also called hydraulic redistribution, is the drawing of water by a plant from a deep soil layer and release of it at a shallower soil layer. Hydraulic lift occurs at night. The Sugar Maple is an example of a common forest tree which exhibits hydraulic lift. Evapotranspiration may be substantially increased by presence of plants which exhibit hydraulic lift, up to 40%.
